You’ve seen Elise’s closet, but I can’t believe I haven’t posted about her bedroom yet. I decorated it mostly before she was born, and other than shuffling some things around, it hasn’t changed that much in 16 months.
I wanted to create a bright, colorful space that wasn’t too babyish. We knew we were expecting a girl, but I still wanted to use a gender-neutral color scheme. (Don’t worry, she gets healthy doses of pink too.)
This was the existing paint color when we moved in, so I’m not sure what the name of it is. I wanted to repaint, but Dan and my mom convinced me the green was a keeper. This room has south and east facing windows, gets a lot of light and has such a good feel to it. The bright green really is the right color for the space.
We also had a dual goal to re-purpose/re-use items we already had and keep the total cost low. The rug, the shelves and all of the furniture (except for the crib) were things we already owned or were given to us. Most of the accessories and art were also things I’d been collecting over the years or made myself. Some pieces were even in my childhood bedroom.
This room’s layout was a bit of a challenge with four doors and three windows. We put the crib in front of the windows, but it is pulled out far enough that Elise can’t reach the blinds.
The glider used to be in my parent’s living room, and although it was in good condition, my mom was ready to pass it on. My mother-in-law kindly had slipcovers made for the forest green cushions and it’s a completely different chair now.
The area rug is the ubiquitous kid’s room staple from IKEA. We actually had it in our living room at our last apartment before moving into this house. I’m not sure what possessed me to make that decorating choice, but I was thankful to be able to re-use it.
I’m not much into room themes, and as any mother knows, people love to ask pregnant ladies what the nursery “theme” is. I would always respond with “no theme — just bright, fun colors.” But lo and behold, there is a slight, unintentional animal theme going on here. I think my love of animal figurines is to blame.
By far, the crib was the most expensive thing in the room at $300, but even so, the total cost for everything (including the crib) came in well under $500.
