I hope you don’t mind that I’m milking Elise’s room for a couple more posts. I’m really proud of it and there’s just so much in there to talk about!
Like I mentioned before, the crib was the only main expenditure for the room. The rest of the furniture cost us very little.
The dresser used to be my brother’s when he was a kid, but it was at my parents’ house no longer being used. It was scuffed up and had some water damage on the side, which I fixed with some wood filler before painting. I painted a bunch of different colors on the dentil molding to liven it up. Even before she was born, I could imagine her standing there pressing the squares with her finger like buttons. And just the other day, I actually saw her do just that.
I replaced the broken hardware with some brushed nickel cup pulls from eBay. They were an unusual size (2.5″ spread), but were super cheap (about $2 each including shipping).
My brother bought me the mid-century nightstand years ago at an auction for $2. It had already been painted, so I wasn’t the one to “ruin” it. I used it as a nightstand for a couple of years before painting it the same aqua as the dresser. I painted the feet white to give it “socks,” which gives it a fun, slightly juvenille look.
The glider was a hand-me-down from my mom. Maybe not my dream chair, but free trumps a lot. It was in good condition, but the forest green cushions were not what I wanted. I bought some cheapish home decor cotton from Jo-Ann Fabric and my mother-in-law had slipcovers made. New chair! And it’s super comfortable. In the last couple of weeks of my pregnancy, I even napped in the chair a few times.
I found the microfiber storage ottoman at HomeGoods. Before you remark how well it matches the dresser, know that I found the ottoman first, then matched the paint to the ottoman.
The bookshelf and shelves, were pieces we already had. I covered the back of the bookshelf with some animal print wrapping paper, but it’s just stuck on there with double-stick tape. Completely removable when we get tired of it.
