About a month ago, I asked Dan what he thought needed to be fixed or replaced around the house. He surprised me by saying he thought our family room couch needed to go. Actually, he probably said “sofa,” not “couch.” He doesn’t say “couch,” but the word “sofa” just sounds too fancy to me. Couch, sofa, whatever. I’m ready to see it go too.
This blue behemoth is about seven years old and while the fabric and frame have held up well, the shape of it has not. The back cushions are loose/unattached and do not stay where they should, making the whole thing look shabbier than it really is. It is also too soft (yes, there is such a thing!) and provides little back support.
So last week I did something exciting. (Well exciting for me, anyway.) I bought a real grown-up couch. Like one where you get to customize the fabric, but that you have to wait two months while they build it.
We chose the Martin sofa by Rowe. After dealing with how messy our current couch looks all the time, I wanted something sleeker with a tight back. The one above is in a velvet, but ours will be in a different fabric.
The fabric I chose is also a dark charcoal gray, but it also has a bit of brown in it, so it should blend with the rest of the furniture in the room. It’s a microfiber (I’m no dummy) and it has a teeny tiny herringbone pattern that I love.
It was kind of a splurge, but I figure if we’re going to splurge, it’s best to spend the money on something that we will use every day. We spend a lot of time in our family room and on the couch (we are thisclose to being professional TV watchers), so it was important to replace it with something of quality.
I’m going to be perking up the family room like I’ve been doing for our living room. Stay tuned for a post on that soon.

Yay- I just did the same thing! I can’t believe how excited I was to buy a grown-up couch. I just wish we didn’t have to wait so long to get it- 12 weeks!!
I think mine is going to be a similar color to your bottom photo… yellow/grey striped pillows and all.

Hooray for new couches! I’m not sure why the lead time is so long either. Mine is 8-10 weeks, but I don’t see how it should take that long unless they are always behind. I like the yellow and grey combination, but I picked something different for my pillows. They had so many options!
