After my initial round of backyard plantings, I started working on a flagstone border. All of the stones were already on our property, stacked in the back corner. And the easiest, cheapest and most eco-friendly solution is always to use what you already have on hand.
I laid them all out to make sure I would have enough to outline the entire length of my dirt patch. Pure luck that I had enough plus a few extras. Since this is a border not a walking path, I didn’t do any prep work or leveling of the soil or anything.
I shaved away the dirt just enough to inset the stones to be level with the ground. Then I filled the cracks between the stones with loose dirt to hold them in place. They are pretty firm in the ground, and I assume they will continue to settle over time.
I wanted them to be flush with the ground so that we could run the lawn mower right up next to them. No trimming = less maintenance. And we are all about less maintenance.
They definitely give some shape and intention to what was once a bare patch of dirt. But the best part of the project is that it was free free free!

Good luck! I’m not a professional, but the method I used worked just fine!
