For the past couple of years, I’ve challenged myself each holiday season to make handmade gifts for each of my family members. (That’s 14 people! Yikes!) It’s not easy. It’s not quick. But I’ve found it to be a great way to push myself into creating MORE. I generally don’t make things unless there’s a need, and gift = need.
Something about this fall weather has lit a fire under me to start getting my handmade gifts going now. I know it sounds a little crazy, but starting early takes a lot of the pressure off. It keeps me from staying up late or scrambling to get projects finished at the last minute. That kind of thing can suck the fun and enjoyment right out of creating. And December is way too busy with events, shopping, cookie making, etc. to cram in making a bunch of gifts too.
So I’ve started looking through my supply surplus and stocking up at the craft and fabric stores (during sales and with coupons, of course). I’m amassing quite a project list for myself this year, but if I start now, I think it’s totally do-able.
Like the last couple of years, I’m a little loose with my definition of handmade. Creative is probably a better word to use; I’m OK with using sewing machines, computers, printers, etc. to make my gifts.
And again like last year, I probably won’t be showing you the gifts I’m making before Christmas, as many of my family members are also readers of my blog (hi guys!). But you can see the results of my 2010 Handmade Gift Challenge if you need a little inspiration for your own handmade gifts.
Do you have any plans for handmade gifts this year? Share them in the comments!
